Mentoring Makes a Difference…

In 30 minutes once a week, through the school year, your consistent influence can help a student improve their academics, attendance and attitude. You can be the difference in a student's success.
Mentor do not have to have special skills, you do not have to tutor. Training sessions are offered through the year when we have people ready to volunteer for this important task. There is no charge for the training or for the background check. Please email or call to let us know of your interest. We will get back with you to let you know when sessions are scheduled.  We will do a training session for your business associates, civic or social club or faith group. Taking the training does not obligate you to become a mentor but will afford you the opportunity to discover what mentoring is about. A young person is waiting to be encouraged by you, please consider becoming a consistent caring Mentor.

The Mattie C. Stewart Foundation shared their Choice Bus with 1554 7th 7 8th graders in all of our traditional and charter public schools with positive feedback from both students and teachers.  The DoD STARBASE returns often to our county bringing their hands-on STEM learning to our 5th grade students. In 2012 they will arrive at both Sunshine and Mt.Vernon-Ruth Elementary Schools. Past Year's have had them at Spindale, Forest City-Dunbar and Forrest Hunt Elementary Schools. We've seen an increase in Stem comprehension of 30% in the 4 days of instruction and one of our folks declares her daughter won a science award as a direct result of the excitement she gained for science through STARBASE. We welcome this wonderful team back to our county.
